starry eyes

inspiration: roky erickson   (now in the shop!)

when i was an art student in new york in the late 90's, i shared an apartment with my friend jesse on the lower east side (10th st. and 2nd ave). jesse's girlfriend and i instantly hit it off and started a psych girl band. one of the first cover songs we learned was you're gonna miss me by the 13th floor elevators.
there's a pretty crazy but true roky erickson documentary (watch it on youtube right here) ...
after all he's been through, it's truly amazing that roky is alive and on tour now.
if you get a chance to catch one of his shows, go!!! i promise you'll be inspired.
*the original members of the 13th floor elevators are playing a reunion show in austin at the levitation festival in may, first time since 1967!
my favorite song: starry eyes

nature's glory

waratah flower and kookaburra bird
australia's natural habitats and creatures are so uniquely, amazingly, glorious!... who knew?!! i didn't quite realize until  i began creating this custom mobile for a new baby (due feb.1st :)
cockatiel, brumby, koala w eucalyptus, frill neck lizard, waratah flower and kookaburra
"brumbies" are wild horses in australia
i've never actually seen a koala freely munching in a eucalyptus tree (we have a giant eucalyptus tree in our front yard, so it would be awesome)...well, only at the l.a. zoo.
and i've only ever seen cockatiels in pet stores here but i can imagine how fantastic it would be to find them in your gum trees, laughing with the kookaburras!
and the frill neck lizard! now my son wants to dress up for halloween this year like this...
thank you australia for all your inspiring natural glories

sandy and frankie

i made this mobile for a little girl named frankie, who was born in a blacked out hospital in new york city during hurricane sandy:
                                                                   there's a wet cat
hurricane with clouds and rain
gas canister
flashlight and fish
uprooted tree
and floating taxi
This little girl is a strong one, to be born in the storm...and with a wonderful dark sense of humor, i'm sure!

pippi and the gift

pippi hula hoop mini mobile is now in the shop :)
look at this beautiful package i just  received from nancy mungcal of pretty little thieves! i've always admired nancy's works of dreamy ink and watercolor paintings and illustrations. she has a wonderful art shop and has recently been featured in frankie magazine for her magnificent cat plates.

inside the beautiful wrapping, i now own "the yarn animal book" by caroline m. staples  published in 1976 by simon and schuster. nancy had seen little lenny that i made from a vintage pattern and thought that i might enjoy this book of vintage animal patterns.
and yes it's full of inspiration and covers a bit of everything, knitting, crochet, crewel and sewing
look at those sweet little  hanging crochet bugs!
i also found out that nancy has opened a  cool new vintage shop called field and ramble
and that she only lives a few miles away from me!! we're definitely going to hang out and do some  art and thrifting.
